Army Review panel passes judgment on Abu Gharib photos

After careful study of the infamous Abu Gharib prison photos an army review panel has decided the malicious photos were taken with a low end “consumer” digital camera.  Fred Greydorman the Army's chief photographer passed judgment this morning at the Pentagon during a press conference.

Greydorman quickly pointed out that the review panel had not reached a final assessment but outlined the accusations against the photographers, he said,

"Notice the soft focus from the cheap plastic lens and the unacceptable levels or moiré and color noise.  As with most digital cameras the white balance is tricky to get set right. Notice the green cast on the prison walls in the background.  The white balance is balanced for flash and as with most “consumer” digital cameras the flash doesn't have enough power to properly light the background.

Another image has proper white balance, but is plagued by blown out highlights.  Another problem with most “consumer” digital cameras is the JPG compression of the image.  Apparently the photographer had limited space on his memory card and many pictures of abuse to take.  A major hurdle in our task as been the low pixel count in these images, were not sure if the camera that took these was even 1 megapixel, it’s really quite astonishing what these people tried to get away with.”

After dodging questions about the moral implications of the photographs Greydorman quickly wrapped up the conference by  saying, “The Army is very concerned about the quality of its soldiers photos.  This sort of craftsmanship is unacceptable in today's modern army.  Steps will be taken to correct this problem immediately.  Every soldier in the field will be issued a new 4 megapixel camera and will be painstakingly trained  to properly use them.

In an interesting side note Greydorman's team found some photo manipulation in the image of General Karpinski during Rumsfeld's visit to the prison.  Apparently the cover up involved the Vampirism cult that Karpinsky belongs to.
