| Back when I went to College at
SIU I met many strange people. Colleges are full of strange
people right? Actually mostly the people were pretty plain and boring.
90 percent of the people I talked to were preps from some suburb who went
to school in Southern Illinois University for two reasons: Reason # 1 being
that it was as far away from their parents as they could get and still have
in state tuition. Reason # 2 being that SIU is still the number one
party school in Illinois if not the midwest.
Gee I needed to get that off my chest, now anyway I've been bike riding a great deal lately and it's led me to think about bikes and that led my thoughts to SIU and all the bikes that were everywhere all year round. One of the strangest bikes I saw is built by a company called Rhoades Car that specializes in 4 wheeled bikes. These are pretty interesting looking but they are actually far inferior to a standard bicycle designs. The 2 extra wheels create double the rolling resistance and weight required for those tractor seats and gears makes one of these about 5 times heavier then a good bike. But the advantage is that 4 people can set back and relax and travel from point A to point B at about 6 miles per hour, as long as there are no hills.
So there was a guy that rode one of these contraptions all over campus and carbondale for that mater. But he always rode by himself which I found strange since the point of these bikes is to carry more people. One day I'm walking to Wham building and cutting through some grass and directly in my line is the Rhoades Car Guy, parked under a tree and setting in the back seat of his car bike. Now normally I would just vere a little to the left to avoid someone but I was in a good mood so I went straight to the guy and took a long look at the bike car. In a few moments the Rhoades Car Guy looked up from what he was reading and his eyes bugged out. I said, "Hey I'm just checking out this set of wheels." And his face contorted into a mask of anguish. He bolted from the back seat and landed in the front drivers seat. Then he said something, something so profound I got out a note book and wrote it down. He shouted, "I'm tired of your shit; humans, ideas, they are more important then machines, I am a man! and with that he started riding circles around the tree. I watched him ride the circles and every time he would turn to face me he would look behind him. I walked off with my dream of riding the Rhoades Car unfulfilled. |
